What is "The Smart Grid"?

The electric utility grid has been remarkably unchanged over the last 100 years. The grid has traditionally provided very little information regarding its health, efficiency or use characteristics.  The Smart Grid, as its name implies, provides far greater intelligence for both the utility generator, distributor and end user.  This intelligence is provided by smart meters, a complex data communication network and variety of upgraded software components. 

The resulting "Grid" allows consumers to make more choices about how they use power, provides the intelligence for including renewable power sources and reduces the utilities need for expensive peak power generation capabilities.
